Midwest Throwdown

The Melee leadership was having a conversation about spring tournaments in Fall 2007 and the timing of the usual suspects just wasn’t working out.  Michelle’s solution?  Run our own tournament!  But wait… no one from our region will travel to Austin.  Ok, no problem.  Let’s run the tournament in Missouri.  We’ve done it before and there are a TON of teams in the area.  The other leadership just looked at Michelle and they knew there was no stopping her.  Midwest Throwdown was born.

That first year was well… challenging.  Snow, teams dropping out, and all of the challenges that come with running a tournament 1000 miles from home attacked in full force.  Luckily (good planning?), Michelle had backup backup fields and the tournament went on as planned.  Generally, we try to keep this tournament in the box of things we don’t talk about (also in this box: South College Regionals ’07, Colorado Cup ’09, Philly Classic ’10, most of Worlds ’10…) but the past two years of the tournament have been AWESOME.

Michelle has helped the Wash U girls run the tournament for the past two seasons and it has grown in unimaginable ways.  Last year, the team maxed out at 32 teams in 3 divisions, including the Roundup Division, an innovative endeavor which paired small, local teams with all-star guest coaches.  The tournament also included a skills clinic, giving many college players the opportunity to learn from the best in the game.

This year, the Wash U girls will be running the tournament on their own, with Michelle and Without Limits taking on an advisory role and helping to plan the skills clinic portion of the tournament.
